Practical Rod and Wire Production Techniques for Advanced Alloys and Composites
Meeting the demands of evolving manufacturing and environmental landscapes frequently entails the development of pioneering processes and materials. Yet, generating innovative materials presents its own set of challenges. This project necessitates the establishment of a methodology for producing rods and wires, facilitating the production of powder for novel alloys. To accomplish this task, a forging machine known as a round swage will be employed. The created rods and wires will be used to produce powder using Ultrasonic Plasma Atomizer (UPA) and the wires will be used as is for Directed Energy Deposition (DED), an additive manufacturing technology.
Keywords: Manufacturing, Innovative Materials, Aluminium processing, Rods and wires production
This project entails the development of tool sets for the round swage to customize rods and wires to meet the size specifications of the UPA and DED machines. Initially, these tools will be designed using Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) software and subsequently fabricated in Technopark facilities. Once the tools are operational, the production of new aluminum alloys through forging becomes feasible. Further, it will be necessary to install an induction oven and coiling machine to collect the wire. To advance the project's scope into innovative materials, carbides will be incorporated into the aluminum matrix and forged into rods/wires using the round swage.

In this project, our aim is to be able in lab to produce new alloys that will be used as rods and wires for UPA and DED machines.
• Gain proficiency in wire and rod production techniques on a small scale.
• Perform background study on aluminium extrusion process.
• Fabricate machine components following the devised protocol for tool design and implementation employing CAD
• Install an induction oven for annealing and coiling system for wire collection.
• Ensure the operational functionality of the fabricated tool sets to enable the production of new aluminum alloys through forging processes using the round swage.
• Integrate carbides into the aluminum matrix to introduce innovative material properties, enhancing the strength and performance of the forged rods and wires.
• Forge materials with varying hardness levels, demonstrating the project's capability to manipulate material properties as required.
