The possibility for renewable energy autarky on all scales in Europe
A transition to renewable energy might offer the possibility to switch to a local and autarkic energy supply, in which countries, regions, or municipalities in Europe are self-sufficient. In this project we want to assess the possibility of energy autarky, i.e. whether the potential of renewable energy is higher than local energy demand.

A transition to renewable energy might offer the possibility to switch to a local and autarkic energy supply, in which countries, regions, or municipalities in Europe are self-sufficient. However, it is unknown whether energy autarky is at all possible in Europe. In this project we want to assess the possibility of energy autarky, i.e. whether the potential of renewable energy is higher than local energy demand.
This project builds on a previous study that assessed the possibility for electricity autarky, considering electricity demand, wind power, and photovoltaics. Within this project, the existing analysis will be extended by an estimation of local demand for heat and e-mobility, and by renewable heat supply technologies. The existing analysis is implemented in Python and performed using open source software. The student working on this project should have at least basic knowledge in Python or any other language for scientific computing. Experience in working with large geospatial data will be helpful. Your supervisors will be able to point to you to appropriate resources to get up to speed with the required skills and assist you with technical questions.
