Adipocytes’ marrow influence on the bone remodelling process
Marrow adipocytes play an important role in the bone remodelling process by enhancing bone resorption. Nevertheless, a model that studies both the bone remodelling process and adipocytes is still missing. The goal of this project is to analyse how the adipocytes are related to the bone multicellular units.
Keywords: In silico model, Bone Remodelling, Adipocytes, Simulation, Programming
The bone marrow tissues are relevant for the bone remodelling process; they are composed by adipocytes that secrete substances like cytokines and adipokines. These chemicals have different effect on osteoblasts, cells involved in the bone formation. The adipocytes and osteoblasts come from mesenchymal stem cells and reside in the bone marrow.
Furthermore, the blood supply of bone and bone marrow are related to each other, and many diseases affecting bone marrow affect bone remodelling.
The focus of this project is to assess the mechanism of the adipocytes with respect to the bone remodelling process. In the Laboratory of Bone Biomechanics, we have developed a multiscale multi-physics model for bone physiology. The objective of this project is to expand this model by including adipocytes in the bone marrow tissue. The student has to implement the model in Python or C++ language code and run the related numerical simulations. Therefore, it is required that the student has a good knowledge in programming in Python or C++ language.
