Novel Sensor Design for Preterm Infants based on Near Infrared Optical Tomography
The student will learn the principles of TR NIROT and design a sensor probe, which fits a variety of human heads, and register the system to a human brain atlas.
Infants born prematurely are at risk for cerebral palsy, cognitive, motor ability, hearing and sight problems. To prevent infants from suffering developmental problems, early imaging of the brain oxygenation is probably very important for intensive care, but unfortunately not yet available. Therefore, our group at BORL is developing a novel time-resolved near infrared optical tomography (TR NIROT) system called Pioneer for monitoring the brain oxygenation of neonates. It is a non-invasive modality designed for bedside usage. The system shines pulsed near infrared light into the tissue and captures the time-of-flight of the photons re-emerging from the tissue with a time-resolved camera with 50 ps resolution. Reconstruction algorithms are applied to obtain 3D images.
The current probe, which is placed on the tissue, is not optimized for human anatomical shapes. A new probe suitable for clinical tests is needed.
