The role of nucleation in freeze-drying processes
The main goal of the project is to investigate the phase diagram and nucleation conditions (formation of ice crystals) of water-API and/or -placebo mixtures in small volumes under conditions similar to those found in industrial practice.
The work will start with an extended literature review about freeze-drying processes, then the phase diagram of the system will be determined. Eventually, nucleation time experiments will be carried out and the system will be modeled accordingly. Depending on the outcome of these experiments, additional freeze-drying runs may be executed at the site of the industrial partner in Schaffhausen.
At the end of the project, the student will have gained experience in a complex and highly relevant area of active research. The results and findings may have direct impact on an ongoing new product introduction occurring at the industrial partner.
