Single-Cell Image Data Analysis and Machine learning
The immune system plays a crucial role in protecting our body from foreign threats and infections. However, due to ineffective vaccines and pathogens evading the immune system this does not always work which results in many different disease such as chronic inflammation, Cancer, Virus infections. In order to find out why immune cells in our body are not capable of responding efficiently to identifying these threat, we are trying to uncover how each cell behaves when an immune response is triggered. We are doing this by encapsulating cells into individual droplets and observing their behaviour, such as the production of an antibody against a disease. Using this single-cell droplet technology approach, we are measuring in real-time from 10-100,000 cells for multiple of these functions such as Antibodies simultaneously creating large image datasets. In order to improve biology and medicine of the immune systems and the development of better vaccines, we need highly-trained algorithms to better extract relevant conclusions from the big data we generate from highly parallelized, multiplexed single cell experiments. To achieve this, we aim to further improve machine learning and objection detection as well as tracking based algorithms.
The student is expected to continue working and improve the data analyse pipeline on a project experiment chosen specifically for him or her. The data Analysis requires skills in Matlab and Python. Beneficial skills include machine learning and image analysis software skills (skimage etc.)
