AM enables to produce complex parts with integrated functions due to large design
freedom. However, the AM technology enters the industrial series production slowly. A
reason is that the part properties such as surface roughness and near net shape of the asbuilt
parts is not sufficient for most end-user applications. To further implement the AM
technology into series production, the post-processing effort needs to be reduced by
applying different strategies within the process chain. One example of post-processing
reduction of AM parts is hybrid Additive Manufacturing. In this field several research
questions still need to be answered.

In collaboration with different industry partners, we are working on different projects.
Within this projects application oriented and highly relevant research questions are
identified. At the pd|z we have the opportunity for the student project to work with different
machineries to find answers to the research questions by empirical experiments and
simulations.
We continuously searching students for student theses and student assistants. If you are
interested to work in application-based research projects feel free to contact us.

The chair‘s vision
The chair of Product Development
and Engineering Design at the
ETH Zurich considers itself a center
for system-oriented product
development and innovation. Our
aspiration consists on the one hand
of the advancement and investigation
of methods and processes of
product development and on the
other hand of the development of
new technical systems. The purpose
of our daily work is to contribute
to the innovative ability and
competitiveness of Switzerland.
