Open Ground: De-paving Urban Surfaces (Politecnico di Milano Summer School)
APPLICATION CLOSED - 22 – 26 July 2024 - In our cities, numerous areas are unnecessarily covered with concrete or asphalt, where urban nature could gain space and thrive. The summer school will investigate creative forms and processes of de-paving and material reuse to trigger new aesthetics and ecological processes.
Open Ground is a week-long workshop taking place in summer 2024 in the southern suburbs of Milan, Italy, near the urban-industrial regeneration area of Porto di Mare (Sea Port). The workshop challenges students with different backgrounds to critically confront the act of soil desealing and regeneration, its dynamics, and materiality. Particular attention will be paid to the opportunities of demolishing, sorting, and recycling materials on-site to create new ecologies of meanings, spaces, and functions. Students of architecture, landscape design, natural sciences, and environmental engineering among other disciplines, are invited to discuss together and with local stakeholders and invited experts about urban soil regeneration through resource-conscious landscape design (the circular and local reuse of materials). Fieldwork, mapping, designing, and experimentations will be conducted on-site to reveal the potential for Porto di Mare and the multiple agencies involved in this transformation, as well as its possible future trajectories.
